Around the World With Cinderella

What do you know about Cinderella? Maybe Disney’s iconic blonde-haired, blue eyed princess? Maybe you’ve read the Brothers Grimm version from 1800’s Germany. But did you know that Cinderella’s story appears are around the world in many different cultures?

The story of Cinderella is one of the most well-known ever written. With its universal theme of good triumphing over evil, there have been hundreds of variations of this myth that appears in folktales in almost every culture around the world. In China Cinderella is “Yen-Shen”, in Egypt she is
“Rhodopis”, “The Rough-Face Girl” to the Algonquin nation of North America, “Nyasha” to the people of South Africa.

While many may be staying close to home this summer, readers can go anywhere using their imagination! So let’s travel around the world with Cinderella and visit different places and cultures!

Cinderella Around the World: The Gift of the Crocodile

Did you know there are 1500 known Cinderella-like stories from all around the world in many different languages and cultures?Travel the world again with Ms.Trisha and Ms. Jill as we read "The Gift of the Crocodile" byJudy Sierra. In this variant of Cinderella, a little girl seeks help in the most unlikely of places. The Gift of the Crocodile is a folktale from the island of Halmahera, or Spice Islands, in Indonesia.

Cinderella Around the World: The Egyptian Cinderella

We're traveling to Egypt this week for our next Cinderella Around the World! The Egyptian Cinderella is the world's oldest Cinderella story. It was first recorded by the Roman historian Strabo. While parts of this story is fiction, what is fact is that there really was a Greek slave named Rhodopis who married Pharaoh Amasis in 570-526 B.C. Enjoy!
