
1898 – The USS Oregon left San Francisco Bay on a 16,000-mile voyage around South America to join the Atlantic Fleet in Key West.
1937 – The turtling schooner A.M. Adams arrived in Key West on its first voyage, delivering a cargo of 380 green sea turtles to the kraals and soup cannery. The new vessel had been built at Grand Cayman by the Thompson Fish Company and was named for general manager Aurelius Maitland Adams.
1953 – A plan for the protection of the Florida Key deer was agreed upon in Washington by Congressman Bill Lantaff, officials of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and representatives of the Wildlife Federation.
1987 – The waste-to-energy plant built by the Montenay company for Key West began operation. The plant was designed to burn garbage to create electricity, but it was unsuccessful and later closed.
1994 – A Chalks Airline seaplane crashed during take-off from Key West Harbor, killing the two pilots. No passengers were on board.
