1898 – Two unidentified bodies from the Battleship Maine were buried in the in the Key West City Cemetery.


1935 – The Key West City Council passed an ordinance requiring nighttime bicyclists to have “a light of sufficient brilliance to be seen at least 300 feet in front of the bicycle.”


1950 – The U.S. Weather Bureau moved from the Naval Station to the Federal Building at the corner of Simonton and Caroline streets. The Bureau also had a station at the airport.


1970 – Bill Butler was named captain for the first-team Class A, All-State Basketball Team by the Florida Sports Writers Association.


1991 – The Winn-Dixie Marketplace opened at the Overseas Market.


1995 – The Jessie L. Hobbs memorial administrative wing in Marathon High School was dedicated to the memory of the longtime teacher and school administrator. Hobbs, who died of cancer six months earlier, had last served as Assistant Principal at Marathon High.


2010 – The Friends of Higgs Beach, an ad hoc citizens’ group, was working with Monroe County to improve the Key West beachfront park, after the county contracted for a new master plan to be drawn.
