1901 – N.M. George on the yacht Privateer fishing in the Bahia Honda Channel landed a tarpon that weighed 213 pounds and measured 7 feet 2 inches in length and 46 inches around.
1902 – The three-masted schooner Cactus was successfully hauled out on the marine railway at Curry and Sons shipyard. The schooner’s hull had been badly damaged, and the repair was expected to employ many men.
1924 – Plans were announced for a new five-story hotel at the corner of Duval and Fleming streets in Key West. It was estimated the project would cost $450,000, a sum that would be raised by local stock sales and outside capital.
1930 – After having explored a change in routes, the Mallory Steamship company announced that service between Key West, New York, Mobile, and Tampa would remain. This would allow lucrative shipments of live sea turtles from Key West to New York to continue.
1951 – Elliott Roosevelt, son of the late president, bought one and a half acres of land in Marathon for $35,000. He planned to build a home and motel on the property that stretched from the Overseas Highway to Florida Bay.
2014 – The family of Charles Eimers, a 61-year-old Michigan man who died in police custody after an altercation at Key West’s South Beach, sued the city and 12 KWPD officers, claiming he was killed by excessive force and officers conspired to cover it up.
