
1864 – John Whitehead died in New York. He had been a partner of John Simonton, John Fleming and Pardon Greene as the first American owners of Key West.
1927 – The Key West Planning and Zoning Board met for the first time. The members of the board were: Chairman W.W. Demeritt, L.T. Bragassa, Miss Mollie Parker, A.C. Elgin and Emory Pierce.
1937 – Dr. C. Williamson of the Florida State Board of Health completed an investigation of Key West’s dairies and reported that they compared favorably with the best in the state.
1951 – Developer Joe Sirugo agreed to sell 3,500 cubic yards of marl to the city of Key West. It would help satisfy the city’s need of 10,000 yards of marl to fill United Street between Leon and George Streets and to fill George Street along the new city housing project.
1965 – Senator George Smathers was the main speaker at the Monroe Junior College on Fort Street.
1990 – Richard Moretti of the Hidden Harbor Environmental Project in Marathon announced he planned to sue the Navy for testing explosives between the Marquesas Keys and Dry Tortugas. Moretti contended there were endangered sea turtles in the area that were not being accounted for.
