1925 – In the first week of mullet season, 250,000 pounds of the fish, caught primarily off southwestern Florida, had been landed at Key West. The catch was consigned to Angel Rios & Co., salted and packed in barrels, then shipped for sale in Havana.


1949 – The Army Barracks complex was transferred to the Navy. The 26-acre site on the western shore of Garrison Bight would be used to build the Peary Court Navy housing.


1953 – A red tide fish kill was reported 10 miles west of Key West. A 20-mile area with dead fish was reported by Fort Jefferson service boat captain Joe Santini.


1989 – Don Pinder, The Key West Citizen’s premier photographer, retired after 35 years.


1998 – The Monroe County Commission voted to accept a $100,000 grant for transit greenway system that would combine walkways and bike paths with mass transit.


2000 – Many concerned Cudjoe-area residents were joined in opposition to a 970-foot-tall communications tower proposed for the north side of the island.
