1851 – Key West had slowed with the summer season: The Coast Survey vessels charting the reef had left for Washington, D.C., work on the lighthouses had stopped, and the steamer Isabel was loading with 45 residents heading northward to escape the heat.

1908 – Monroe County Deputy sheriff and Audubon Society Game Warden Guy M. Bradley was shot and killed by outlaw feather hunters on mainland Monroe in what is now Everglades National Park.

1942 – The merchant vessel J.A. Moffett Jr. was damaged near Alligator Lighthouse by German submarine U-571.

1954 – Motorists were advised to drive with caution around Roosevelt Boulevard and the Stock Island Bridge because stray horses had been grazing alongside the road near there. The horses’ owner was not known, and the Humane Society could not take in the large animals.

1962 – The movie “PT-109,” telling the story of President John F. Kennedy during World War II, was being filmed on Munson Island. Actor Cliff Robertson was portraying Kennedy in the film.

1983 – Congressman Dante Fascell was the speaker at the commissioning of the Coast Guard Surface Effect Ship Petrel at the Coast Guard Base.

1994 – The City of Key West was in a quandary: Developers were claiming the rights to build 1,119 new units on the island, but the municipal comprehensive plan and future land use regulations allowed only 185 new building permits.
