
1852 – A Key West correspondent wrote, “Mr. and Mrs. Mosquitoes made their first appearance on Sunday evening, 13th inst., claiming acquaintance with all they met, as it was more than calm and quite disagreeable to be out.”
1924 – Federal surveyors were investigating topographical conditions at “Bay Cudjoes” to ascertain an appropriate value prior to its sale to the government. It was expected that other keys would soon be similarly surveyed and purchased.
1959 – Key West High School baseball star Boog Powell signed a contract to play professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles.
1991 – As part of the city’s new comprehensive plan development, the Key West Planning Commission recommended Caroline and Fleming streets become one-way heading downtown, and Eaton and Southard one-way heading out.
1993 – The U.S. Navy Hydrofoil Squadron sailed from Key West for the last time.
1995 – The fifth branch of the Monroe County Library System opened with a ribbon cutting at the Big Pine Library.
