
1863 – Wood was being pilfered from the Engineering Department at Fort Jefferson: “All wood, whether in blocks, sticks, boards, barrel staves, firewood, or any other kind,” complained one of the engineers.
1886 – Except for a small amount set aside for the sick, the supply of ice at Key West was nearly exhausted. A cargo from the north was telegraphed for.
1938 – A proposal for a fertilizer factory to be opened in the old warehouse at the Clyde-Mallory Docks (today’s Mallory Square) was heard at a special meeting of the Key West Chamber of Commerce. The fertilizer manufacturers said the operation would be odorless and employ 300 people.
1945 – Monroe County Judge Raymond Lord said he would not enforce a new Florida law requiring couples to wait three days between submitting a marriage license application and the wedding. Lord based his action on a ruling by Judge George Holt, head of the 11th judicial district, who found the law unconstitutional.
1984 – The largest real estate transaction in Monroe County history occurred when the developer of the planned Port Bougainvillea and Garden Cove on North Key Largo transferred 300 acres of land valued at $34,971,666 from his name to the development company.
2004 – Carnival Cruise Lines announced that some of its ships would stop calling at Key West while the Navy dredged the shipping channel and renovated the Outer Mole Pier. The work was expected to take two years to complete.
