
1861 – Judge McQueen McIntosh, who had been appointed District Court judge by the Confederate States, arrived in Key West to hold court. Judge McIntosh was advised that any attempt on his part would result in a clash with Federal authorities and he was persuaded to leave without holding court.
1913 – Agustin Orduan Parla, a Key West native, flew his sea plane to Cuba, becoming the second man to fly across the Florida Straits.
1924 – Business began in Key West for a nine-vehicle jitney service organized by Joseph P. Stickney. The chauffeurs started out with a fare of 10 cents per ride, but they dropped it to five cents as the day progressed.
1958 – A Monroe County grand jury issued a report saying that the jail at Key West was in an unsanitary condition and that it should be condemned and replaced.
1974 – Lignumvitae Key State Botanical Site was invited to be included in the National Register of Natural History Landmarks. The 360-acre island lying offshore of Lower Matecumbe Key has one of the richest concentrations of tropical hardwood trees and woody shrubs in North America.
1994 – The Key West High School Conchs baseball team defeated Clearwater Central Catholic 9-2 to advance to the state 3A championship game.
