
1908 – Mr. C.C. Allen, Socialist candidate for Congress, arrived in Key West for two days of campaigning. He spoke to large crowds about the “social economy of Jesus” at the corner of Fleming and Margaret streets, Southard and Duval streets, and at Trumbo Island.
1923 – A special bond election overwhelmingly approved the funds for building a highway to the mainland.
1924 – Monroe County Commissioners reached an agreement with the Tidewater Construction Company to build the Boca Chica Bridge to link Boca Chica with Stock Island.
1971 – The Florida Keys Memorial Hospital opened for service at 7 a.m., replacing the old Monroe General Hospital.
1974 – Four Key West men were arrested for dove hunting near the city dump on the north side of Stock Island. They were charged with discharging firearms and destroying birds within city limits. Illegal wildlife takings, including of Key Deer, were increasing throughout the Keys, and the Florida Game Commission promised increased patrols.
2004 – Fearing a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union, the Islamorada Village Council decided not to block a showing of the Michael Moore documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11” during a private rental of the Founders Park pool. The film was critical of the U.S. war in Iraq, and some council members did not agree with its message.
