August is STEM Time at the Key Largo Library

The Key Largo Library has several fun and engaging STEM programs scheduled for the month of August.

Friday, August 2, 3-4:30 pm
REEF Genetics Lab

Did you know that scientists are using genetics to help coral reefs recover? Come learn how scientists use DNA from reef species to help ocean life. During this lab participants will be able to pull DNA from a strawberry, just like a scientist! Stay at the end for a demonstration of a Lionfish dissection. For ages 6-14. Presented by Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF.org)

Tuesday August 6 and 20 4 pm
LEGO Club

Calling all builders! Be creative and build with LOTS of LEGOs provided by the library. Work on your own creation or build as a team and test your skills with building challenges! Challenges: August 6: Spinning Top, August 20 Three Colors. For ages 6-11.

Thursday, August 8 and 22 4 pm
Intro to Game Design

Do you like to play video games? Are you interested in learning how to make your own animations and games? Join us at the Key Largo Library to begin your coding journey! Sign up at the front desk as seating is limited. Library laptops will be provided. Participants will use code.org. For ages 10 – 14.

Bubbles!

Learn about the science behind bubbles and bubble making, while exploring interactive mini labs. Each interactive activity will challenge you to see bubbles in a whole new way. We hope you will POP in to see us! For ages 3-11.

Origami in Outer Space

Paper-folding is an ancient Japanese art form with some beautiful results. Did you know that it’s also used in science and math? Come learn how the art of origami is changing the world, and then see what you can make with a single sheet of paper. All supplies provided. For ages 10-14.
