September is Library Card Sign-up Month

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, MCPL and other libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs-up for their own library card. From free access to programs/activities, in-person and virtual help, to the expertise of librarians, a library card is one of the best back-to-school supplies available.

Marley Dias, author, executive producer, and founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks, is joining the ALA (American Library Association) and libraries nationwide in promoting the power of a library card this September. With a library card, empower yourself and gain access to technology, multimedia content and educational programming that transforms lives and strengthens communities.

Visit your library online or in-person to get a library card!

How Does the Library Empower You? Tell Us for the Chance to Win!

There’s nothing more empowering than a library card. Through access to technology, media resources and educational programs, libraries provide people of all ages the opportunity to pursue their dreams and passions.

And there’s no one better to tell that story than library lovers like you. This Library Card Sign-up Month, we’re asking everyone to help spread some library love by posting to social media about how the library empowers you for a chance to win. Here’s how it works:

Post to Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #LibrariesEmpower. Entries can also be submitted by posting as a comment or wall post on the I Love Libraries Facebook page. Don’t forget to tag your library! The creator of one randomly-selected post will receive a $100 Visa gift and an ALA Graphics Star Wars The Child Poster. Additionally, three second-place winners will receive an ALA Graphics  Star Wars The Child Poster. The #LibrariesEmpower promotion begins Wednesday, September 1, at noon and ends Wednesday, September 22, at noon.
