A brief history of Pride and Rainbow Book Month
Like many other celebratory months, Pride Month started as a weeklong series of events and expanded into a full month of festivities. June was chosen for in honor of the Stonewall Riots in 1969. For more information about the history of pride visit Library of Congress-PRIDE
Originally established in the early 1990s by The Publishing Triangle as National Lesbian and Gay Book Month, this occasion is an opportunity for book lovers and libraries with the very best in LGBTQIA+ literature. Celebrated by the American Library Association (ALA) since 2015, GLBT Book Month™ was renamed Rainbow Book Month™ in 2020, in coordination with the ALA Rainbow Round Table’s name change in 2019. Rainbow Book Month™ is an initiative of the American Library Association and is coordinated through its Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services and the Rainbow Round Table.
