Remembering Norma Kula

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Norma Kula, retired Director of the Monroe County Public Library.

Norma began her Monroe County career in 1984 as a Library Assistant at the Islamorada Library. She joked that she held nearly every position possible in the library system, lastly serving as Director of Libraries from 2000—2021.

Under Norma’s leadership, the library expanded its vision, service, and community engagement. Under her direction, the library introduced internet access, eBooks, streaming video, online historical images, musical events, language learning, and a multitude of programs and services embraced by the Keys community. Norma was honored at the state level, appointed as one of three public library representatives to the Library Council of the Florida Department of State. She also reviewed and ranked federal grant applications for Florida library projects and initiatives.

Norma brought devotion, wisdom, and wit to her many years with Monroe County and was an inspiration to library staff and colleagues. Her many dear friends remember her fondly as someone who was always there for them, loved animals of all kinds, an amazing storyteller, was mischievous with a devilishly funny, quiet laugh and a beautiful, crooked smile. She will be greatly missed.
