Jill’s Little Library
Hello everyone! Welcome to September! It’s officially fall (not that that means much down here in the Keys). Is there anything that you guys look forward to during this time of the year? I personally can’t wait for pumpkin carving and being able to wear sweaters and jackets – for about a month at least.
The first book that I want to talk about this month is Batman: The Court of Owls Saga by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo.
Hidden for years, the mysterious Court of Owls surfaces in Gotham City -what must Batman do to defeat them, and what deadly connection do they have to his past?
After a series of brutal murders rocks Gotham City, Batman begins to realize that perhaps these crimes go far deeper than appearances suggest. As the Caped Crusader begins to unravel this deadly mystery, he discovers a conspiracy going back to his youth and beyond to the origins of the city he’s sworn to protect. Could the Court of Owls, once thought to be nothing more than an urban legend, be behind the crime and corruption? Or is Bruce Wayne losing his grip on sanity and falling prey to the pressures of his war on crime?
This was SUCH a good comic. If you are a fan of Batman then this is definitely essential reading. However, if you are like me and not a fan of the Bat I would still recommend this. I went into this knowing nothing about it and not really liking Batman at all and came out with a new appreciation for Batman and the BatFam. This is a comic book that I would recommend to everyone, regardless of if you are a Batman fan or not!
Next up we have Home by Nnedi Okorafor. It’s been a year since Binti and Okwu enrolled at Oomza University. A year since Binti was declared a hero for uniting two warring planets. A year since she abandoned her family in the dawn of a new day. And now she must return home to her people, with her friend Okwu by her side, to face her family and face her elders. But Okwu will be the first of his race to set foot on Earth in over a hundred years, and the first ever to come in peace. After generations of conflict can human and Meduse ever learn to truly live in harmony?
I actually listened to this book as an audiobook last month and I really enjoyed it! The narrator was really amazing and I loved how she sounded. She really brought the book to life for me. This was a fantastic second book in the trilogy. I feel like the story progressed nicely and we also got some great flashbacks that gave us some insight into Binti’s past. And we also learned a lot about her family, which to me was the reason that she ended up taking off and going to school (you’ll have to read and find out for yourself whether that was a good thing or not). I would highly recommend you check out this book if you liked the first one or if you are just a fan of sci-fi in general.
One of the books that I read last month is called A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. Feyre’s survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price …
Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre’s presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.
This book has been on my list to read for literal years and now I finally got around to reading it! I was pleasantly surprised by how much that I enjoyed it! I didn’t realize that this was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast but now that I’ve read it I can totally see it. If you are a fan of fantasy books then this one will be right up your alley!
The next book that I want to talk about it Bombshells Vol. 1 by Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage. Learn the story behind this alternate reality where the Second World War is fought by super powered women on the front lines and behind the scenes! It all begins with the stories of Batwoman, Wonder Woman and Supergirl.
This was a really fun alternate reality comic book. As someone who’s not really a fan of the DC ladies this was a great way to get into their stories in a fun and inventive way. I would highly recommend this one, even if you’re not a fan! This was such a fun read, I think that anyone would like it.
The last book that I want to talk about is The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan. In the second book of the series, Percy Jackson must travel to the Sea of Monsters to try and retrieve the Golden Fleece before Camp Half-Blood is destroyed by monsters. Along the way Percy makes a new friend and runs into some legendary monsters (as usual). Will he be able to find the Fleece and get it back to camp before everything is destroyed? You’ll have to read it and find out!
I absolutely love this series (I’m currently on book four!). Percy is such a fun narrator and even though he can be a little dense sometimes, going along on his adventures has been so much fun. Percy, Grover, and Annabeth are such great characters. They’re all written so well that I feel like I’m actually friends with them. I can’t wait to see how this story concludes and I will definitely update you guys once I finish this series.
